Natural Toothpaste- warning
A student of mine recently sent me this Do it yourself “natural” toothpaste recipe. They said it’s going around and thought I would be interested. OK, so I took a look and below is the recipe:
3 TBS Coconut Oil—- OK, organic coconut oil is exceptional for the human body bit externally and internally, so this ingredient is a good one.
3 TBS Baking Soda—- Baking Soda is excellent for alkalizing the internal body as well as the harmful acids on the teeth and in the mouth- so this is another good ingredient.
25 drops Peppermint Oil—- well that seems like a lot of Peppermint oil for this recipe, but Peppermint helps kill viruses, bacteria and is helpful to rid the body of radiation, is a natural deodorant among many other uses. It also helps give the toothpaste a fresh taste. OK then, another good ingredient.
1 packet of Stevia—- sure, why not. Not essential, but more of a taste factor. Yes it is said to also have beneficial health effects on the teeth as well, but mildly so.
2 TBS Vegetable Glycerin—- WHAT!!!??? This is NOT a good ingredient and should not be included in a do it yourself, healthy and natural toothpaste. Glycerin does the same thing as sodium lauryl sulfate, it softens the gums which causes gum recession with regular tooth brushing. If course sodium lauryl sulfate is nasty stuff that causes all kinds of other issues beyond gum softening like mimicking the same effects in the body as oestrogen and even carrying carcinogenic properties. Back to the gums…Never put any ingredient in toothpaste that softens the gums! If anything we need to place ingredients that harden the gums and help them heal from years of using gum softening garbage to clean our teeth with. Good quality sea salt and baking soda does wonders for this!
That is my break down of this toothpaste recipe that has been going around the internet. I hope it helps to clarify things a bit.
Happy Brushing!

Hey White Wolf,
i like this topic, as i have had to endure a lot of well “educated” dentists in my life, lucky i have only three white fillings even if they are the best of a bad lot.
the last few years i have been trying to figure out how to keep my gums and teeth healthy without going overboard on cost.
i found out about fluoride in my twenties as i grew up in a fluorocilic acid contaminated water supply as all of ireland by law has to have it put in. crazy!
and i also knew that glycerin can coat the teeth stopping remineralisation.
my question is: what can someone in your opinion do to reverse or stop very slight gum recession, repeated canker sores? what would the best dental protocol in your opinion be to start and keep up?
flossing, wooden dental picks, tape, it’s a minefield.

To heal gums with the mind you would use pale yellow directly into the gums themselves, bright copper for the teeth and their roots and ice blue overall because it is part of the 5th chakra. You can also mentally visualize the gums growing back.
As to physical work- brushing with baking soda and salt gently and downward, away from the gums can help. Also rinsing the mouth twice a day with a strong tea made from any of the following plants can heal the gums as well as strengthen them:
Common Plantain leaves
Acorn husks
Oak Bark
Comfery Root
Wintergreen leaves
Black Alder bark
Hope that helps
