Accidents and Free Will?
Accidents and Free Will?

Hello to all. This article I am writing concerns a topic that has weighed heavy upon the minds and hearts of many through the ages and around the world. I will try to shed some light upon this subject by sharing a small bit of what my teacher, Meechgalanne said about it.
There are those who believe we are all here following the exact and detailed path that we have chosen before we came to this earth. These people believe that everything that happens to us we did to ourselves by making the choice before we were born. Then there are those who feel that we did not choose anything, but follow the whim of the great winds of time. Others see life as an open book that we were either given tools or chose the tools to work our way through before our birth. On and on the beliefs go as to what controls our existence. It seems to be a very large part of human nature to enjoy thinking that humans are in full control of their existence. Of course this can be quite a comforting thought and belief in such a time of turmoil.
Meechgalanne would speak of this topic and what he said I would question. I questioned everything he ever told me because this was my way of allowing the space for me to test all things for myself to bring the purity of experience into my every fiber of being. He would tell me that humans chose their major paths before they entered the birth stage of their current lives. “Humans chose to be here in the specific time and place they were born into because they sought the lessons that only that moment and place could teach them. They chose the path but not the details contained within. That would be something meaningless. If humans could chose every moment and every event in their life before them, there would be no point to the life. They would already know what to expect and then understand the experience path that they would but have not yet walked. There would be no free expression and everything would be mundanely laid out without purpose.” I asked him why so many thought that everything that happened to someone, that person chose to have happen to themselves. “You must remember, young Wolf, that humans seek comfort and the ego filling idea that they are in control of their existence. The truth of it is that there are so many details in existence that interfere with the pathways of everything, that it is quite impossible to lay a path out and keep it pure. The spirit of humans cannot presume to know the minds and ways of everything they will meet in life or beyond. If they cannot know this then they cannot presume to say that every event in their lives was planned out and happened because they chose it to be so. There is so much interference from outside negative forces in the world today. Humans could not possibly know what is going to happen in their lives before they live it. If they knew that, what would be the point of living it? Plus, how can they account for all of the interference from 3rd parties?” I asked him this question, If someone were in captured and tortured in a time of war, would they have previously chosen that or draw that experiences to them? Meechgalanne’s response was, “Because of many third party interference it is most likely that they did not choose that experience. If they were living an unbalanced way and full of self hate and lack of self worth, then yes they may have drawn that energy and experience to them. However, if they were living and striving to live a balanced life then this experience would most likely have been brought on by the imbalanced ways of a third party. If this is the case then they must do the only thing they can, try to gain the tools they need from past experiences to deal with and learn from their current situation.”
I pondered his words deeply for a few days before I asked more questions. When I was ready to know more I asked him how we could have all the tools in life we needed if things change so much. He said, “Say a human is born into this life with the tools they need at the beginning, and then some imbalanced force comes along and throws serious interference in the whole plan, are they then really equipped to deal with that? The answer is that we are all born with tools to begin, but it is up to us to learn to use those tools to find other tools along the way to assist us.” Now I was bit confused because Meechgalanne always told me that there were no such things as accidents and that everything happens for a reason. So I asked him what he meant by this. He told me this, “Events will always occur whether there is interference or balance. Energies are always shifting and flowing like the waters and the air. Since this is the way it is, everything that happens is meant to and no accidents can occur because events happened to create the proper alignments to manifest more and specific events in life. An accident is defined as an event that happens unintentionally. Nothing happens unintentionally because there are always signs around us telling us what it going on. Only if we do not focus will we not see and then think an accident has occurred. That is an illusion of the mind.”
To wrap it up here I will say that through my own experiences in life I have learned to see the wisdom of Meechgalanne’s words. His wisdom still echoes along my path today and I can say that I have never seen his words proven wrong. He was an amazing man.
Medicine Blessings to all,
White Wolf

I’ve always said that life is like a choose-your-own-adventure book. We still have the free-will to make choices for ourselves and take responsibility for our actions & the resulting consequences, yet at the same time, parameters exist and experiences that will come into our paths that we cannot choose. Like the choose-your-own-adventure books, we can choose to go to page 11 or 25, but what happens when we reach either of those pages is already laid out, as a part of what must transpire, and then we’re faced with more choices of how to act from there. Sometimes despite our choices, we are still made to face trials, rewards, or events in life that we had made decisions to try to avoid. This says to me some things are truly things “meant” to happen. There are many reasons to take personal responsibility for ourselves & how we choose to act, as I feel that those choices can shape our experience. However, there are some things that we must experience regardless of our will. It would be foolish to believe everyone who’s faced a major disaster chose that path. (Take the recent earthquake in Japan as an example). The trouble is with accepting that maybe things don’t have to be “either/or” in life, because many people strive to “figure it all out” and “make sense of things”. To me, some things you can change, and some things you can’t. As simple as that…

I had a serious injury several years ago and am still in the process of healing. At first I was convinced that this was something I had “contracted” to occur for some higher purpose. I no longer see things that way. Pain is a purifier. It takes you to a place where you are able to let go of the non-essentials. It opens the heart to greater compassion and you feel great love for all beings.
“Nothing happens unintentionally because there are always signs around us telling us what it going on. Only if we do not focus will we not see and then think an accident has occurred. That is an illusion of the mind.”
Yes. But it takes vigillance to be aware of the signs and recognize the intentions. This is not information that can change all situations either, even if you see danger approaching.
Having worked with war-affected children, I can state they really were not in a position to avoid what happened to them. They were children facing the enormity of war. Once safe, they had choices about what they were going to do with that experience and the rest of their lives.
How we respond when the unexpected visits us can transmute and transform something terrible into a liberating rebirth that can propel us into new directions.
Thank you for sharing your experience.
